Earthquakes – a message from Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche

Dear Friends and Sangha members,

As you have heard, in the last few days a series of major earthquakes has caused the death of thousands of people and widespread devastation across Nepal.

It is hard to imagine the suffering of those who have lost their loved ones, or who are left injured or homeless. We extend our deepest condolences and offer our heartfelt prayers to all those affected.

So far everybody including the Rinpoches, monks, and nuns at Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling and associated monasteries, nunnery, retreat centre and university department is relatively well. No one was killed or seriously injured.

The monks and nuns are now busy helping the local community by providing meals and assistance to those in need. The older monks and nuns are also looking after the younger ones, helping and comforting them during these difficult times.

Our international and Himalayan university students, while trying to contact home, have also begun helping the local community by donating food and money and helping the monastery dig latrines and clear debris etc.  Everybody is helping out.

Due to the many aftershocks, all our monks, nuns, and university students are forced to sleep outside in spite of heavy rains during the night. There is no electricity and the water is becoming scarce.

Our main monastery, Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling, is still standing but the buildings have suffered severe damage:

·       The main temple has sustained major structural damage and will need to be entirely rebuilt.
·       The new monk quarters on the western wing have sustained significant structural damage.
·       There is considerable damage in many other buildings, including flooding.

As for the nunnery at Nagi Gompa, some of the old buildings have collapsed and many buildings have suffered structural damage. But the good news is that nobody was severely hurt or injured.

Everywhere we are still in the process of determining the full extent of the damages.
At the same time, throughout these difficult times, we must continue feeding, clothing, and educating the monks and nuns.

In all the affected areas of Nepal and her neighbouring countries there are many projects that need help and our monasteries are keen to assist in search and rescue efforts, rebuilding homes, and assisting those in need. For this we now ask for your help. Please consider making a donation to Shedrub Development Fund
